Bankruptcy

There are two main types of consumer bankruptcy, Chapter 7 and Chapter 13.  In a Chapter 7, the debtor discharges the debts she can no longer pay.  A Chapter 13, on the other hand, involves repayment of debt and is typically filed if there's a pending sheriff sale or if the debtor makes too much money to qualify for a Chapter 7.
